Neti Pot Secrets

by Jack

A neti pot is a cute little pot with a long snout which can be used to give a sinus rinse.  You simply tilt your head forward and to one side, stick the snout of the neti pot into one nostril, and tilt the pot upwards, until water flows into the nasal passage and out the other nostril.  The netti pot is good for relief from sinus problems, like chronic sinus infection, dryness sinus pressure, nasal allergies and dryness, sinus pressure and even snoring.  If you have never seen a good neti pot irrigation, there are pictures below to help you follow along.  If you don’t have jala neti pot, you can get companies like Amazon to ship you a neti product easy enough.

Note: while the netty pot is considered an alternative medical device, the following instructions are not meant to treat any medical conditions, such as sinusitis.

Having said that, the following procedure does a wonderful job of clearing congestion, even better than a hot curry!

The most common mistake new neti pot users make is to not make a saline solution.  If you use bottled water, or tap water, without adding some form of salt (either table salt, sodium chloride, or baking soda, sodium bicarbonate), it will sting your nose and be very unpleasant.

The second most common mistake people make is to not get the water to body temperature.  The water should be right around 98F or 37C, and if you make the water too hot (like boil it in a kettle – a real no, no), or take the water from the fridge (ouch!), it will sting so bad, you’ll be reluctant to try your netty pot ever again.

Be very sure that you get the salt ratio right, otherwise the nasal irrigation will cause more sinus problems than it helps.  The correct amount of salt is one teaspoon (5ml) in 16 ounces (500ml) of water.

How To Use a Netti Pot – Jala Neti Instructions

A real jala neti pot cleansing experience is pleasant – it feels good to clean the nasal passages with your neti pot!  In fact, after a few times, most people report a greater sense of smell, and deeper sleep (probably due to the increased oxygen intake you get when your nasal passages are all clean).  Heck, some new age folks even think this waterfall through the nose trick can bring enlightenment.

To do a neti pot nasal irrigation, you should pour one half of your sinucleanse saline solution (or homemade saline solution) into one nostril, then blow out the excess water (just like blowing your nose), then tilt to the other side, and pour the remaining solution through

When you use your neti pot, be sure to tilt your head forward and to the side, to let the fluid go in one nostril (the one on top!) and out the other.  Cleaning with a neti pot feels strange at first, but after a few tries, you’ll start to really like your neti pot – that’s why neti pots become beloved objects around the home.
